Nicholas Rosen von Rosenstein is widely considered the "Father of Modern Pediatrics."
Before this work was published in Swedish in 1764 (and later translated to English in 1776, as seen on this edition's title page), children's illnesses were usually treated as minor variations of adult diseases. Rosenstein was one of the first doctors to recognize that infants and children have unique physiology requiring specialized care.
Even more fascinating is his translator, Andrew Sparrman. Sparrman was an adventurous Swedish naturalist and physician who was actually a student of Carl Linnaeus. Shortly before translating this book, Sparrman sailed around the world with Captain James Cook on his famous second voyage to the Pacific (1772–1775)!
