Vintage Set of 5 Macmillan Pocket Classics Hardcovers (1918–1923) – Shakespeare, Eliot, Burke
Transform your space with a touch of history and literary brilliance. These classic volumes will not only enhance your bookshelf but also provide hours of enriching reading.
This series was introduced by The Macmillan Company around the turn of the 20th century. They were engineered specifically for high school and college students to serve as durable, affordable literature textbooks.
Publisher: The Macmillan Company (New York & London)
Format: Small pocket-sized hardcovers (approx. 4 x 5.75 inches).
Binding: Standard publisher's brown cloth with dark brown stamped title frames on the front covers and titles on the spines.
Condition: Fair / Good antique condition.
Exterior: The brown cloth covers show moderate to heavy handling wear, including corner bumping, edge fraying, and minor spine cloth loss at the head/tail caps (particularly visible on Merchant of Venice and Burke's Speech). The Julius Caesar volume shows prominent cosmetic staining on the lower front cover.
Bindings: The text blocks remain firmly attached to the hinges, though the paper over the inner hinges shows light cracking from age.
Interior: The pages feature a warm, uniform antique toning. A major highlight is the extensive, legible student notes, annotations, and character outlines handwritten in pencil and vintage ink on the blank flyleaves and margins, a true testament to their historical schoolroom use. Burke's Speech shows a small tear to the edge of the frontispiece portrait page.
